Psych Test: It Should Apply to All

Psychiatric Test for Candidates Pushed

The Philippine Star, April 15, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino migrant workers' group today joined the call of the Nacionalista Party for Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III to undergo a psychiatric evaluation in light of an alleged report that the presidential bet had suffered from depression.

John Leonard Monterona, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator, also urged all candidates for national positions to undergo psychiatric test to assure that voters will be electing mentally sound and capable leaders.

He said that if the government requires overseas Filipino workers to undergo such test, the same examination must be given to those who want to govern.

"The same should apply to those who are running for an elective national position to ensure that they are mentally capable to discharge their duties as elected officials," Monterona said.

With this, he called on presidential and senatorial candidates to submit themselves to the psychiatric examination.

"The electorate has the right to know candidates’ mental state and it could only be done if the candidates themselves would make their psych examination results open to the public," Monterona said.

Aquino has refused to undergo the psychiatric test but challenged NP presidential bet Sen. Manny Villar to subject himself to a lie detector test.

I agree with what this OFW group is trying to push for. Psychiatric testing should be mandatory, and it should be no problem for the candidates if they claim to be sane or normal. However, when a candidate refuses to take the test, suspicions arise as to why he or she wouldn't take the test. Is the candidate hiding something? Is he covering up for something?

The presidential seat is the top post in the country, and arguably the most difficult job in the world. It requires being able to think logically and straight, despite under pressure. It is important that a country is run by a person who is mentally stable, sane, and wise, at the very least.

Noynoy Aquino has to take the test, so that everyone else may follow. If he has nothing to hide, he should be alright.

But with the looks of it, I think we should brace ourselves from a big bad revelation coming from NOY.
